Chamonix has recently been awarded the Flocon Vert award in recognition of its efforts to protect the environment for a more sustainable winter sports industry.

Flocon Vert - the green snowflake - is awarded by Mountain Riders, a French environmental group dedicated to preserving mountain resorts for future generations through sustainable development. Resorts are rated on over 40 different environmental and social criteria, from transport infrastructure to use of renewable energy.

Other resorts that have been awarded the green snowflake include Villars in Switzerland and Les Rousses in the French Juara mountains.
