IATA Travel App Ready Within Weeks

23 Feb 2021

IATA, The International Air Transport Association is developing an international "IATA Travel Pass" app that they hope to launch within weeks. The app will provide passengers with a digital platform that aims to provide a global and standardized solution that can validate and authenticate all country regulations regarding COVID-19 passenger travel requirements.

The IATA Travel pass aims to address the challenge faced all over the world as travel restrictions start to be lifted. The app will inform passengers on what tests, vaccines and other measures they require prior to travel, details on where they can get tested and give them the ability to share their tests and vaccination results in a verifiable, safe and privacy-protecting manner. IAT see this solution as the "key to giving governments the confidence to open borders".

The BBC has reported that the app is already being trialled by Singapore Airlines, Air new Zealand, Etihad, Emirates and Qatar Airways. Vinoop Goel, IATA’s regional director of airports and external relations has said that they expect to have a fully functioning working system over the next few weeks.

The app has been developed as an open source solution that can work on both Android and iOS platforms with four key modules:

  1. Registry of Health Requirements
  2. Registry of Testing / Vaccination Centres
  3. Lab App - enabling authorised test centres to securely send test results or vaccination certificates to passengers.
  4. Travel Pass App - enabling passengers to create their own digital passport and manage their own digital travel documentation
